How we ranked these
We ranked tools that generate synthetic data with AI models first, then rule-based and mock-data tools, then simulation tools for images and sensors, using each maker’s own site. Prices are shown only where published. The old list led with Gretel, but gretel.ai now redirects to NVIDIA’s synthetic data page (TechCrunch reported in March 2025 that NVIDIA reportedly acquired it), so we list NVIDIA NeMo Data Designer, which NVIDIA publishes as open source. SDV, MOSTLY AI, Tonic.ai and Synthesized stay from the old list. We replaced Snowflake Native Synthetic Data, YData, NVIDIA Omniverse Replicator, Hugging Face Distilabel and Faker with Betterdata, SAS Data Maker, Mockaroo, Rendered.ai and Parallel Domain because we could not verify those five on their own sites in this pass, and Omniverse Replicator would repeat NVIDIA. Syntho is covered under MOSTLY AI, since its site says Syntho acquired the MOSTLY AI trademark. Facts are taken from each maker's own published information; check the official site before you buy.
Questions people ask
What is the best synthetic data generation tool?
Tonic.ai is our top pick: it covers synthetic databases from scratch with Fabricate, masked copies of production with Structural and text redaction with Textual, and Fabricate has a free plan with $5 of monthly credits. MOSTLY AI is #2 for its Apache-licensed SDK and SDV is #3 for relational data.
Which synthetic data tools have a free tier?
Tonic Fabricate has a Free plan at $0 with $5 of monthly credits, and Mockaroo has a free plan with 1,000 rows per file. NVIDIA NeMo Data Designer and the MOSTLY AI SDK are free open-source installs, and SDV code is publicly available under the Business Source License.
What happened to Gretel?
The old list led with Gretel, but gretel.ai now redirects to NVIDIA’s synthetic data page, and TechCrunch reported in March 2025 that NVIDIA had reportedly acquired the company. NVIDIA’s own page does not mention Gretel, so we list NVIDIA NeMo Data Designer, which NVIDIA publishes as open source.
Who owns MOSTLY AI now?
A banner on mostly.ai says Syntho acquired the MOSTLY AI trademark and related assets, and the logo now reads MOSTLY AI powered by Syntho. Syntho therefore does not appear as a separate pick.
