How we ranked these

The BMW X6 has had three generations: the E71 (released in April 2008), the F16 (sales from the end of 2014) and the G06 (sales from November 2019, updated in March 2023). We ranked ten model years across all three, with the facelifted G06 and the last E71 included. The other model years are left out because their NHTSA complaint or recall counts are higher than the years we kept, or because they are near twins of them, and the newest two model years are left out because KBB lists no used price for them. Ranking is by NHTSA owner complaint counts first, then recall campaigns, then Kelley Blue Book owner reliability ratings, with used prices from KBB. Counts were read from the NHTSA API and prices from KBB when we checked, and prices change weekly. NHTSA files the X6 under several model names (X6, X6 M, X6 XDRIVE35I and others), so counts are unique complaints and unique recall campaign numbers across those names. The NHTSA recall lookup can return fewer campaigns than exist, so check any car by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. KBB reliability ratings on the G06 years come from only 5 reviews, so they do not separate those years. Newer years have had less time to collect complaints, and mileage matters as much as year. Best overall: the 2023; best value: the 2017.
