How we ranked these

We ranked the EVs by one published cold-weather test: the CAA EV Winter Test, which drove 13 EVs until the battery ran out at -7 to -15 degrees Celsius and compared the distance with the official Natural Resources Canada range. The smaller the percentage loss, the higher the rank; ties go to the longer distance driven. This is a Canadian test of earlier model years, not a US test. We kept only models that their US makers list for 2026 or 2027, so the Polestar 2 (Polestar’s US site lists only pre-owned Polestar 2 cars) and two other tested models that we could not confirm as 2026 or 2027 US listings are left out. Prices are each maker’s own US starting MSRP. For range without a cold test see our Top 10 Long-Range EVs at /cars/best-long-range-evs-2027/. Facts are taken from each maker's own published information; check the official site before you buy.

Questions people ask

Which EV loses the least range in cold weather?

In the CAA winter test, the Chevrolet Silverado EV and the Polestar 2 each drove 14% less than their official range, the smallest loss of 13 EVs. CAA adjusted the Silverado figure because it started at 73% state of charge. The Polestar 2 is not on this list because Polestar’s US site shows only pre-owned Polestar 2 cars.

How much range do EVs lose in the cold?

In CAA’s test at -7 to -15 degrees Celsius, the 13 EVs drove 14% to 39% less than their official range.

Which EV drove the farthest in the CAA winter test?

The Chevrolet Silverado EV drove 456 km, ahead of the Tesla Model 3 at 410 km and the Polestar 2 at 384 km.

Is this test from the United States?

No. CAA ran it on the road from Ottawa to Mont Tremblant and compared each EV with the official Natural Resources Canada range, so the kilometers are Canadian figures. We list only models that US makers show for 2026 or 2027.
