How we ranked these

We ranked ten US-market C-Class sedan model years from four generations: the W203 (2001 to 2007), W204 (2008 to 2014), W205 (2015 to 2021) and W206 (2022 on). The ranking goes by NHTSA owner complaint counts first, then recall campaigns where NHTSA's recall lookup returned a count, then Kelley Blue Book owner reliability ratings, with used prices from KBB. The 2021 is the exception: NHTSA returned only partial listings for it, 15 complaints against 79 for the 2019 from the same W205 facelift generation, so we did not rank it on that count and placed it directly after the 2019. The W205 is the best generation overall for a used buyer: its 2019 and 2021 carry a 4.4 out of 5 owner rating at prices from $16,950. The W206 is newest and takes the top three places, but KBB owners rate it 3.0 out of 5 and it costs the most. The W204 has the best owner rating, 4.7, but the most complaints, and the W203 is the cheapest and oldest. The 2022 and 2023 tie on complaints and recalls; we broke that tie on price. NHTSA's recall lookup returned no results for the 2005 and 2014 and an incomplete listing for the 2010, so their recall counts could not be confirmed and they are ranked on complaints only. Counts were read from the NHTSA API and prices from KBB when we checked, and prices change weekly. Complaint counts cover everything NHTSA files under the C-CLASS name, and recall counts are the unique campaign numbers NHTSA returns under the C300 and C 300 names. KBB reliability ratings are shared across years: the 2010 and 2014 pages show the same 406 reviews, the 2015 to 2021 pages the same 95 and the 2022 to 2024 pages the same 18. Newer years have had less time to collect complaints, so they rank higher on that measure, and mileage matters as much as year. Prices shown are KBB sedan prices.
