By Kory White · Updated Oct 2026 · 7 min read
2027 Toyota Camry
Direct answer

The best mid-size sedan in 2027 is the Toyota Camry: it starts at $29,700, is hybrid-only with 51 combined mpg on the 2026 LE, and IIHS lists it as a Top Safety Pick+. The best value is the 2026 Hyundai Sonata at $27,450, also a Top Safety Pick+. Only five mainstream gas or hybrid mid-size sedans are still sold new, so picks 6 to 10 are the electric Tesla Model 3, the Toyota Crown and three near-luxury sedans.

How we ranked these

We kept new mid-size sedans that the maker or EPA lists for 2026 or 2027, then ranked them by the IIHS award on its 2026 page, published crash and fuel economy results, and starting MSRP. Prices are before destination unless noted. IIHS and NHTSA pages sometimes cover an earlier model year than the one shown; NHTSA star ratings for several models could not be confirmed and are marked that way, not treated as zero. Only five mainstream gas or hybrid mid-size sedans remain on sale (Camry, Accord, Sonata, K5, Altima), so we filled the rest with the electric Tesla Model 3, the Toyota Crown, and three near-luxury picks (Lexus ES, Cadillac CT5, Mercedes-Benz E-Class). EPA classes the Accord, K5 and Sonata as large cars by interior volume, but the makers sell them as mid-size sedans. Dropped: the Chevrolet Malibu, which The Drive reports is discontinued; the Subaru Legacy, which is not on Subaru's current lineup page; the Acura TLX, which is not on Acura's sedan lineup page; the Hyundai Ioniq 6, which Hyundai's site lists only as a 2025 model; the Mazda6 and Volkswagen Arteon, which EPA's 2026 list did not return; and the Volkswagen Jetta, which EPA classes as compact.
