Executive Spotlight: Alexandr Wang, Chief AI Officer of Meta (2027)
Alexandr Wang is Meta's Chief AI Officer. Meta's own executive page says he joined in June 2025 as the company's first-ever Chief AI Officer and that he leads Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), the group that holds Meta's frontier model, product and research work. Before Meta he founded Scale AI in 2016, a San Francisco company that supplies data and technology to AI developers.
He matters because Meta paid $14.3 billion for a 49% nonvoting stake in Scale AI in June 2025 and brought him in to run its AI push. The first public result from his group was the Muse Spark model, released April 8, 2026.
This page uses only public professional information from Meta, Scale AI and news pages read on October 31, 2026. His title was confirmed on Meta's executive page that day. Company figures are labelled company-reported, and press reports are labelled as reports.
Current role and company
Wang is Chief AI Officer at Meta Platforms. Meta describes the post as new: he is the company's first person in it. His group, Meta Superintelligence Labs, was announced in a memo from Mark Zuckerberg on Monday, June 30, 2025. As reported at the time, MSL brings together Meta's foundation model teams, its product teams and the FAIR research group, plus a new lab focused on the next generation of Meta's models. Nat Friedman, a former GitHub CEO, co-leads the group and oversees AI products and applied research.

Career path
- 2016: founds Scale AI. Meta's executive page says he founded Scale AI in 2016 while a 19-year-old MIT student. Fortune reports he dropped out of MIT after his freshman year to start it.
- 2016 to 2025: builds Scale AI. Scale describes its mission as developing reliable AI systems for the world's most important decisions and says it is headquartered in San Francisco. Meta's executive page says Scale grew to nearly a $29 billion valuation under his leadership.
- June 2025: the Meta deal. On June 12, 2025, Scale announced a significant new investment from Meta that values Scale at over $29 billion, leaves Meta with a minority stake and moves Wang to Meta. Chief Strategy Officer Jason Droege became interim CEO. Press reports put the investment at $14.3 billion for a 49% nonvoting stake.
- June 30, 2025: MSL is created. Zuckerberg's memo names Wang to lead the new superintelligence group.
- Since then at Scale. An Axios headline linked from Scale's own site, dated July 30, 2026, says Scale hired Google Cloud COO Francis deSouza as its new CEO.
What he is known for
Two things stand out in the public record: the Scale AI deal, and the first model from his group.
- The Scale AI transaction. Meta took a minority stake in a company that also supplies data to AI developers, and hired its founder to run its AI organisation. This is the move that put Wang at Meta.
- Muse Spark. On April 8, 2026, Meta's newsroom introduced Muse Spark as MSL's first model, the first in a new series of large language models from the group. Meta calls it small and fast by design but capable enough to reason through complex questions in science, math and health. It powers the Meta AI app and meta.ai, and Meta's May 12 update says it is rolling out to WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger and Threads and to Meta's AI glasses in the US and Canada.
- A change of approach on openness. Reuters reported that, unlike earlier Llama releases, Muse Spark is not open weights and was offered to select partners as a private preview. Wang said in social media posts that larger versions are in development and that Meta plans to release at least some of them openly.
Leadership style and philosophy
This section draws only on what Wang himself has said in interviews, as reported by the outlets named.
- Small, dense teams. In a TBPN interview on September 17, 2025, Wang described MSL as incredibly talent-dense, said its members should rank in the very top handful of people at other AI labs, and said the group had about 100 people, fewer than other AI labs have (Business Insider).
- Compute backed by the business. In the same interview he said Meta has the business model to fund hundreds of billions of dollars in compute.
- Naivete as an advantage. On a 2023 podcast he said there is a "huge premium to naivete", arguing that approaching an industry with a blank slate can help people accomplish things (reported by Fortune).
- Honest about early results. After Muse Spark, he publicly acknowledged rough edges rather than claiming a finished product.
Key numbers about Meta (company-reported)
Wang does not run Meta, so these are company-wide figures from Meta's third quarter 2026 results release of October 21, 2026. They show the scale of the business his group works inside.

What to watch next
Three public items are worth tracking: further Muse models from MSL and whether larger versions are released openly, as Wang said Meta plans for at least some; how the organisation around him evolves after the March 2026 reports; and how Scale AI performs under its new CEO while Meta holds its stake.
