- 1976. The business bought its own gas station, a Shell on Houston's west side, with Shell financing the first shipment of fuel. For roughly the next 20 years it acquired underperforming stations and fixed them up.
- 1994. The company began building stations from scratch and became a fuel wholesaler. A Burger King franchisee's offer to sell two restaurants fell through, but Dhanani had by then been approved as a franchisee, so he put a Burger King inside his newest gas station: the company's first restaurant.
- 2010. The group bought its first two Popeyes restaurants as the brand began a revamp, according to the Chronicle.
- 2012. When Burger King's parent decided to sell its corporate-operated New England restaurants, it asked Dhanani to take them over; the Chronicle put the number at 101 restaurants.
- 2020 and 2023. Fort Bend County appointed him a director of the Fort Bend County Toll Road Authority and the Fort Bend Grand Parkway Toll Road Authority (2020). Rice University named him an inaugural member of its 2023 Lilie Leadership Council.
What he is known for
- Turning around weak assets. The Chronicle calls him a turnaround specialist whose philosophy is buying underperforming businesses and restaurants that need work, then fixing them up.
- Popeyes scale. In 2019 the Chronicle described the group as Popeyes' largest franchisee, owning about 12 percent of the brand's restaurants.
- Burger King footprint. The same article counted 510 Burger Kings, including the New England restaurants taken over in 2012.
- Diversifying. The Chronicle reported the group adding La Madeleine bakery-cafes (about 40 locations) and Cyclone Anaya's Mexican Kitchen, and moving into real estate and hotels.
- Recognition. Habib University says the group has been profiled by Forbes and named to Nation's Restaurant News' Power List, and that it grew without venture capital or private equity.
Leadership style and philosophy
In his own words to the Houston Chronicle: "You want to buy businesses that you can afford and that have an upside, whether it was mismanaged or whether it needs some capital expenditure to fix it up nice." He added, "You have to be willing to work hard because there is no shortcut, and you have to be determined."
The Chronicle also reported that he believes in holding people accountable, himself included, and puts his name on everything the group operates. Habib University says he describes a hands-on management style, and quotes his advice to young people: "if you have an idea and want to do something, have the courage to go after it."
