How we ranked these

These are ten JRPGs we chose, all sold today on PC or a current console, each with a main Metacritic page and a Steam or Nintendo eShop store page. We selected the candidates ourselves as JRPGs worth playing and did not score every JRPG ever released, so this is not a ranking of all JRPGs. We read each game’s main Metacritic page on November 4, 2026, and ordered the ten purely by Metascore; ties go to the game with more critic reviews behind its score. The Metascore is the one on each game’s main Metacritic page, which for multi-platform games may reflect one platform’s version. We allowed at most two games per franchise. Prices are the US Steam store price (or the US Nintendo eShop price for the two Switch-only picks) read the same day, and they can change. No publisher paid for a place or received any adjustment. Facts are taken from each maker's own published information; check the official site before you buy.
