Should You Buy Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 at Launch?
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches on Friday, October 23, 2026, and Activision says it is a standalone purchase that will not be on Game Pass until holiday 2027. If you want it on day one, you buy it; if you are happy to wait roughly a year, the official plan is that Game Pass will carry it.
Buy at launch if you want the 12 launch 6v6 maps, the 33 operators and the DMZ extraction mode with friends while everyone is new. Wait if you mainly play the campaign, are on a PC near the minimum spec, or already have Black Ops 7, Black Ops 6 or Modern Warfare III through Game Pass Ultimate, which Activision says stay available.
Every fact below comes from Activision's official Call of Duty site, read on October 21, 2026, with the post dates shown.
What was announced this week
On October 15, 2026, the Call of Duty team confirmed that Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23 as a standalone release. Players must purchase it separately to play at launch, and it will not be included with Game Pass until holiday 2027. The same post says Game Pass Ultimate subscribers keep access to Black Ops 7, Black Ops 6 and Modern Warfare III.
On October 19, 2026, Activision published its launch rundown: 33 operators at launch, usable in both Multiplayer and DMZ, with an individual operator assignable to each loadout. A second post the same day covered progression and prestige.
The early access calendar
Digital pre-orders unlock the game before launch. Per the October 15 post, Campaign Early Access began October 16 and DMZ Early Access begins October 20, alongside the Hunter Killer operator skin and the Gilded Pearl camo pack. Any digital edition also gets the Inner Circuit M4 weapon blueprint.
Activision's October 16 post says the entire campaign, sixteen missions across the Korean Peninsula, Paris, New York and Mumbai, is playable now on the Standard Digital Edition or Vault Edition on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam and Nintendo Switch 2. Campaign Early Access runs until launch on October 23, and the campaign's completion rewards carry into Multiplayer and DMZ at launch.
What you get in the box
The official game page describes three pillars. The campaign follows a young South Korean squad, including Private Park, during a North Korean invasion of the Korean Peninsula while Captain Price hunts the people behind it. Multiplayer ships with 12 all-new 6v6 maps on day one, plus larger maps with vehicles and infantry. DMZ is the extraction mode where you deploy solo or with a squad.
Progression is deep from day one, per the progression post: 55 multiplayer levels, a separate 70-level DMZ track, 10 prestige levels and 1,000 Prestige Master levels, with two prestige paths, Classic Prestige and Regular Prestige.
The Vault Edition adds the Hostile Alliance and Special Forces operator packs, the Signature Weapon Collection, one BlackCell season and a DMZ deployment bonus, according to the official page. Players who have owned a premium Call of Duty title can get 10% off the Vault Edition, per the platform pages.

It is on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. The Nintendo page says Infinity Ward is developing it natively for Switch 2 with Digital Legends, the first Call of Duty on a Nintendo console in over a decade, with handheld mode, gyro and Joy-Con 2 mouse controls. The PlayStation page lists 120Hz and VRR support on PS5 and PSSR on PS5 Pro; the Xbox page lists 60 FPS at 4K and 120 FPS at 1440p on Xbox Series X.

- Wait for Game Pass: you are fine waiting until holiday 2027, which is the only Game Pass date Activision has given.
