Is the ROG Xbox Ally X20 Worth $1,299 Over the Ally X?
On October 15, 2026, ASUS Republic of Gamers announced that the ROG Xbox Ally X20 is available to buy, at $1,299 on its own or $2,499 as a bundle, according to the ASUS release. It is worth the extra money only if you want its 7.4-inch OLED screen, magnetic TMR sticks and revised cooling; if you just want a Windows Xbox handheld, the $999 ROG Xbox Ally X has the same Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme chip, 24GB of memory and 1TB of storage.
Thurrott, reporting the launch on October 15, puts the X20 at $300 more than the 2025 Ally X and calls it a premium version of the existing handheld with a custom design. The release says the $599 ROG Xbox Ally and $999 ROG Xbox Ally X stay on sale at their original prices.

The $2,499 bundle adds the ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 gaming AR glasses, a dbrand Killswitch case, a custom Pelican Protector case and a 68W charger, per the ASUS release. Retro Handhelds lists the glasses at $849.99 on their own.
What the X20 adds over the Ally X
ASUS's own comparison on its press page shows the three models side by side. The base ROG Xbox Ally has a Ryzen Z2 A, 16GB of memory and a 512GB SSD. The Ally X and the X20 both list the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 24GB of memory and a 1TB SSD. Both list a 120Hz, 1920 x 1080 screen with variable refresh rate, but the Ally X's is 7 inches and the X20's is a 7.4-inch OLED with HDR.
The release puts the X20 screen at 600 nits typical and 1400 peak, with variable refresh from 30 to 120Hz. It also lists magnetic TMR joysticks, a transforming D-pad that switches between four-way and eight-way input, impulse triggers and two assignable back buttons. The same page lists a redesigned cooling system whose fans ASUS says improve airflow by 20%.
Thurrott adds that the heatsink fin surface area grew by 11%, that the battery is 80Wh, and that the X20 has a translucent black body with gold accents. ASUS lists it at 756g in the release.
Who should pay $1,299
- Buy the X20 if the OLED panel with HDR is the point for you, you want the TMR sticks and the transforming D-pad, or you want the 20th-anniversary design and the option of the $2,499 bundle with AR glasses.
- Buy the Ally X ($999) if you mainly want the same chip, 24GB of memory and 1TB of storage for less. ASUS says it stays on sale at its original price.
- Buy the ROG Xbox Ally ($599) if you want the cheapest way in. It has the Ryzen Z2 A, 16GB of memory and a 512GB SSD per ASUS's comparison.
Because the X20 and Ally X share the same processor, memory and storage, the X20's extra cost buys the screen, controls, cooling and design, not a faster chip. No source read here reports how much those changes help in play, so independent reviews are worth reading before you order.
