Are AI SDRs Replacing Human Sales Development Reps in 2027?

Not fully, and the published evidence does not show a wholesale swap. AI SDR agents are taking over first-touch outreach, lead follow-up and meeting booking, and the vendors with the best-documented results pair them with a human rather than remove the human. What is changing is the shape of the job, not (yet) a proven disappearance of it.

The best public evidence comes from Salesforce itself. It says its AI agent re-engaged 68,000 leads, sent 156,000 emails and autonomously booked 800 meetings, while it also plans a role that pairs a human SDR with the agent (Salesforce). Those numbers are self-reported, and nothing I could find publishes how many SDR jobs AI has replaced.

On the other side, the sector's best-funded startup was accused of claiming customers it did not have (TechCrunch). Treat vendor claims as claims, and test any tool on your own leads before cutting headcount.

What an AI SDR actually does

An SDR (sales development rep) is the person who contacts new leads, qualifies them and books meetings for account executives. Salesforce's own training describes its Agentforce SDR agent as able to act as the first point of contact for incoming leads, carry out personalized outreach, help qualify prospects and schedule meetings on behalf of sellers, so the sales team can focus on specific accounts (Trailhead).

That is the top of the funnel: volume, speed and follow-up. It is the part of the job that is most repetitive, which is why it is the part software is taking first. The same page publishes no performance metrics for the agent, so the training material alone does not prove it matches a human.

What Salesforce says its own AI SDR achieved

Salesforce is the most useful public example because it runs the agent on its own pipeline and published numbers. In an October 9, 2025 blog post, CEO Marc Benioff estimated about 100 million sales leads had gone unanswered over the past quarter century, saying the company "didn't have enough people" to call them back.

These figures are Salesforce's own, and the post gives no revenue figure or cost comparison. Notice what the leads were: contacts the company had previously failed to reach. That is work no human team was doing, so the numbers show added coverage, not rep jobs removed.

The post also describes the intended staffing model. Sales development leader Vanessa Tabbert said Salesforce is creating a role that pairs a human SDR with an AI SDR agent: "Instead of overseeing 500 leads a month, they'll oversee 15,000, because the agent will do most of the outreach." Where AI SDR vendors have stumbled

The loudest cautionary tale is 11x. On March 24, 2025, TechCrunch reported that the company, backed by Benchmark and a16z, had listed customers that said they were not customers. A ZoomInfo spokesperson said it was not a customer and had run a one-month trial, and Airtable said it never gave permission to use its logo. Pleo and Rho confirmed they use 11x.

TechCrunch also reported employee claims that 11x might report $14 million in ARR while contracts past the three-month trial totaled about $3 million, and one employee's claim of losing 70-80% of customers. 11x disputes this: it says it uses contracted ARR, that its retention rate is 79%, and that remaining logo mentions were human error.

This is one company, and the claims come from TechCrunch's sources with 11x's disagreement on record. It shows that headline claims about AI SDRs deserve checking; it does not show that all AI SDRs fail.

What Gartner forecasts for sales teams

Gartner's headline prediction, published in November 2025 and reissued in July 2026, is that by 2028 AI agents will outnumber sellers by 10X, yet fewer than 40% of sellers will report that agents improved their productivity (Gartner). Gartner blocks automated reads of the full release, so only that headline is quoted here.

A May 2026 Gartner survey headline adds that AI saves sellers nearly 5 hours per week, yet 72% of sales organizations fail to reinvest that time in high-value activities (Gartner). And an earlier Gartner prediction says over 40% of agentic AI projects will be canceled by the end of 2027 (Gartner); that one covers agentic AI generally, not SDR tools.

Read together: more agents are coming, and the benefit is not automatic. None of these headlines forecasts a number of SDR jobs lost, and I did not find one published.

What this means for an SDR or a sales leader

This page is not career or investment advice. Where a number is not published, such as total SDR jobs replaced, the honest answer is that it is not known from public sources.

Questions people ask

Are AI SDRs replacing human SDRs?

The public evidence shows AI taking over first-touch outreach and follow-up, not a proven wholesale replacement. Salesforce describes pairing a human SDR with an AI agent (Salesforce). No source I read publishes how many SDR jobs were replaced.

What does an AI SDR do?

Salesforce's Trailhead page says its agent can be the first point of contact for incoming leads, do personalized outreach, help qualify prospects and schedule meetings (Trailhead).

Do AI SDRs actually book meetings?

Salesforce reports 800 meetings autonomously booked as of October 1, 2025, from 156,000 emails sent. These are the company's own figures (Salesforce).

Is 11x a reliable AI SDR vendor?

TechCrunch reported in March 2025 that customers named on 11x's site said they were not customers; 11x disputes parts of the report and says its retention rate is 79% (TechCrunch). Verify any vendor's references yourself.

What does Gartner predict about AI agents and sellers?

That by 2028 AI agents will outnumber sellers by 10X, yet fewer than 40% of sellers will report productivity gains, per the Gartner headline.
