How Does Datadog Hit Its 2027 Revenue Target?
Datadog has not published a 2027 revenue target. The only formal guidance is for full-year 2026: revenue between $4.45 billion and $4.47 billion, given on August 6, 2026 in its Q2 2026 earnings release. Management did not give a 2027 outlook on the Q2 call, so any 2027 number you see is an analyst estimate, not Datadog's.
The levers management points to are in its own filings. Customers with ARR of $100,000 or more grew to about 4,720, up 23% from about 3,850 a year earlier. Trailing 12-month dollar-based net retention was in the low-120%'s. Growth came about 70% from existing customers and 30% from new ones in the quarter. New products such as Bits AI and AI Guard add to the platform.
The main risk is also in the filings: Datadog's AI-native cohort, which includes its largest customer, added high single digit percentage points to year-over-year revenue growth, and the company saw that customer reduce usage starting in the third quarter of 2026. The sections below separate what Datadog reported from what is inference.
What Datadog has actually guided, and for which year
As of October 17, 2026, Datadog's latest guidance covers the third quarter and the full year 2026 only. It was issued with second quarter results on August 6, 2026. The call covered Q3 and full year 2026 only, with no 2027 outlook, per a third-party transcript of the call.
- Full year 2026 revenue guidance (August 6, 2026)$4.45 billion to $4.47 billion
- Third quarter 2026 revenue guidance$1.135 billion to $1.145 billion
- Full year 2026 non-GAAP operating income guidance$1.01 billion to $1.03 billion
- Revenue in the first half of 2026$2,127.88 million, up 34% from the first half of 2025
That means the practical answer to "how does Datadog hit 2027" is that the company has not committed to a number yet. Whatever it says for 2027 will build on the 2026 base, so the 2026 drivers below are the best public guide to what comes next.
Guidance history: how the 2026 number moved
Datadog raised its full-year 2026 revenue range between its first and second quarter reports. In the Q1 2026 release on May 7, 2026, it guided $4.30 billion to $4.34 billion. On August 6, 2026 that became $4.45 billion to $4.47 billion, which is a raise of $150 million at the low end and $130 million at the high end (our arithmetic).
- First quarter 2026: revenue was $1,006 million, up 32% year-over-year.
- Second quarter 2026: revenue was $1.12 billion, up 36% year-over-year, against Q2 guidance of $1.07 billion to $1.08 billion given in May.
- Third quarter 2026 guidance: $1.135 billion to $1.145 billion, which a third-party summary of the call puts at 28 to 29% growth.
- Pace: the transcript says the quarter-over-quarter revenue added of $115 million was a record, and that management said it had "de-risked" the second-half guidance for the largest customer's usage change. Treat the exact wording as unverified because the transcript's speaker labels are unreliable.
Customer counts and net retention
Datadog's 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 is the source for most of these figures.
- Total customers: about 33,400, compared with about 31,400 a year earlier.
- $100,000+ ARR customers: about 4,720, up from 3,850, representing 91% of ARR (89% a year earlier). The count was about 4,550 at March 31, 2026, so roughly 170 were added in the quarter (our arithmetic).
- Net retention: the trailing 12-month dollar-based net retention rate was in the low-120%'s at June 30, 2026, against about 120% a year earlier. Datadog attributes the increase to usage growth from existing customers.
- Gross retention: mid-to-high 90s, per the third-party call transcript. The 10-Q excerpt we read does not state it.
- Existing versus new customers: about 70% of the quarter's revenue increase came from existing customers and 30% from new ones. In the six months it was 75% and 25%. The transcript says new logo annualized bookings more than doubled from a year ago.
Datadog defines net retention as the current ARR of the customers it had 12 months earlier, including expansion and net of contraction or attrition, divided by their prior ARR. New customers are excluded. Because Datadog bills on usage, expansion here largely means existing customers consuming more.
Product lines and segments driving growth
The Q2 release highlights AI-related product launches and recognition. None of these has a reported revenue figure, so we can name them as drivers management emphasizes, not size them.
- Bits AI: Bits Code, Bits Chat and Bits Agent Builder reached general availability, and Datadog launched fully autonomous Bits AI for incident detection, investigation and remediation.
- Security for AI: AI Guard protects AI agents from prompt injection and poisoning attacks.
- Platform reach: more than 100 new capabilities launched at DASH 2026, including Bring Your Own Cloud, plus the Adaptive ML acquisition. Gartner named Datadog a Leader in its 2026 Magic Quadrant for Observability Platforms for the sixth consecutive year.
- AI customers: the transcript cites about 750 AI customers, 31 of them spending over $1 million annually and eight over $10 million. Revenue growth from non-AI customers accelerated to the high 20s percent, up from the mid-20s the prior quarter.
- Backlog: remaining performance obligations were $3,471.4 million at June 30, 2026, which Datadog expects to recognize mostly over the next 24 months. Drawdown contracts make the timing uncertain.
Risks management discloses
The 10-Q is direct about concentration. Customers in specific industries may increase usage and then optimize it, renew on less favorable terms, or not renew. It gives its own example: the AI-native cohort, which includes its largest customer, contributed high single digit percentage points to year-over-year revenue growth in the quarter, rapidly increased usage, and may optimize it later.
Datadog also states that it saw a reduction in usage from its largest customer starting in the third quarter of 2026, which may cause a deceleration in revenue growth. Per the transcript, management said the customer has renewed, that the reduction is included in the Q3 and full-year guidance, and that it declined to share contract terms.
- Dependence on expansion: the release lists reliance on existing customers buying more and renewing, and the ability to attract new ones.
- Growth rate: the release warns that recent rapid growth may not indicate future growth.
- Margins: gross margin was 79% against 80% a year earlier, as cost of revenue rose 45% mainly on third-party cloud hosting. Failure to optimize cloud spend could hurt gross margin.
- Macro: concerns about trade policies, tariffs, reduced economic growth and lower IT spending.
What it means for RevOps teams
- Plan on the guided year, not a rumored one. If a model shows a Datadog 2027 revenue target, check whether it is an analyst estimate. Datadog has only guided 2026.
- Usage-based revenue needs a consumption forecast. Datadog's net retention rose because customers used more. The same mechanism cut revenue from its largest customer. Forecast expansion by cohort and watch for optimization.
- Watch concentration. One AI-native cohort contributed high single digit points of growth. Track your top accounts' share of growth and the renewal terms behind it.
- Split new and existing growth. Datadog reports the split (about 70% existing and 30% new in Q2). Reporting it the same way shows whether growth is expansion or acquisition.
- Large-account depth matters. Customers above $100,000 ARR are 91% of Datadog's ARR, so enterprise expansion motions carry the model.
