How Does Snowflake Handle the Cost of Anthropic and OpenAI Inference at Scale in 2027?
Snowflake does not run Anthropic and OpenAI inference at a flat price. It resells it through Cortex AI and bills customers in AI Credits per million tokens, with a separate rate for input and output tokens on each model. The rates sit in the Snowflake Service Consumption Table, and an AI Credit costs $2.00 with global routing or $2.20 with regional routing, per Snowflake's pricing page.
On its own side, Snowflake has been open that this is a margin question. On the Q2 fiscal 2027 call, the CFO said fast-growing AI workloads "carry a lower contribution margin today" and the company set full-year non-GAAP product gross margin guidance at 74%. Management's levers are model choice, an "auto" mode that routes each task to a suitable model, and open models it runs itself. What Snowflake pays Anthropic and OpenAI is not published. The two $200 million partnership announcements do not give payment terms.
For a buyer, the practical answer is to treat tokens like a metered utility: pick the cheapest model that does the job, watch usage in the account views, and cap spend with the controls Snowflake documents. The sections below show where each figure comes from, and say plainly where a number is not public.
How Cortex AI bills LLM calls
Snowflake's cost documentation says Cortex AI functions incur compute cost based on the number of tokens processed. A token is roughly four characters, though that varies by model. The details that move a bill:
- Input and output are both billed for text-generation functions such as AI_COMPLETE, AI_CLASSIFY, AI_FILTER, AI_AGG, AI_SUMMARIZE and AI_TRANSLATE. Embedding and similarity functions count input tokens only.
- Hidden prompt tokens count. Several functions add their own prompt, so the billed token count is higher than the text you send. In AI_CLASSIFY, labels, descriptions and examples are counted as input tokens for every record, not once per call.
- Documents and audio are converted to tokens. AI_EXTRACT counts each document page as 970 tokens, and audio is billed at 50 tokens per second.
- Warehouse compute still applies. The cost of keeping a warehouse active is separate. Snowflake recommends a warehouse no larger than MEDIUM for these queries, because a larger one can add cost without improving performance.
- AI_COUNT_TOKENS is free of token charges. It lets you size a job before running it; only compute cost applies.
The pricing page separates AI Credits from Platform Credits. It lists $2.00 per AI Credit with global routing (cross-region inference allowed) and $2.20 with regional routing, where requests stay in the account's home region or chosen geographies. ACV-based discounts on AI Credits apply automatically, but the page says capacity discounts do not apply to AI Credits.
What Claude and OpenAI models cost in AI Credits
Table 6(a) of the Snowflake Service Consumption Table lists AI_COMPLETE rates in AI Credits per one million tokens. A sample of the Anthropic and OpenAI rows, as input then output:
- Anthropic claude-haiku-4-50.60 input, 3.00 output
- Anthropic claude-sonnet-4-61.80 input, 9.00 output
- Anthropic claude-opus-4-63.00 input, 15.00 output
- OpenAI openai-gpt-4.11.20 input, 4.80 output
- OpenAI openai-gpt-5.21.05 input, 8.40 output
- OpenAI openai-gpt-5.41.50 input, 9.00 output
- For contrast, Meta llama3.1-8b0.132 input, 0.132 output
Multiply by the AI Credit price above to get dollars. The table is long and moves with each new model, so use it for the exact row you plan to call. Three patterns stand out:
- Output costs more than input. For claude-sonnet-4-6 the output rate is 9.00 against 1.80 for input, so long generated answers cost more than long prompts.
- Small models are far cheaper. claude-haiku-4-5 is listed at 0.60 input against 3.00 for claude-opus-4-6, and the open-weight llama3.1-8b is cheaper still.
- The same model costs more through agents. Table 6(d), which covers Cortex Agents and Snowflake CoWork, lists claude-sonnet-4-6 at 1.95 input and 9.76 output, against 1.80 and 9.00 for AI_COMPLETE.
Prompt caching has its own table. For claude-sonnet-4-6, Table 6(b) lists 1.50 for input, 7.50 for output, 1.875 for cache writes and 0.15 for cache reads, so repeated prompt prefixes can be re-read at a fraction of the input rate. The pricing page confirms that prompt caching is supported with reduced-rate cache reads.
Some rows carry promotional pricing. A footnote on one OpenAI row, openai-gpt-5.6-sol, says its price may increase by 25% on input and 50% on output on November 21, 2026. Other footnotes name December 1, 2026 and January 1, 2027 for other providers' models. If a workload depends on a promotional rate, plan for the step-up.
The Anthropic and OpenAI partnerships
Both deals are headline-sized, and neither release states what it costs Snowflake in a given quarter.
- Anthropic, December 3, 2025. Snowflake's press release describes a multi-year, $200 million agreement that makes Claude models available to more than 12,600 global customers across all three major clouds, plus a joint go-to-market effort for AI agents. Claude Sonnet 4.5 powers Snowflake Intelligence. The release says thousands of customers already process trillions of Claude tokens per month through Cortex AI. Anthropic's announcement repeats those figures.
- OpenAI, February 2, 2026. Snowflake's press release describes a multi-year, $200 million partnership that makes OpenAI models, such as GPT-5.2, natively available to the same 12,600 customers in Cortex AI. Users can apply them to rows, columns, text, images and audio in SQL through Cortex AI Functions. OpenAI published its own post the same day.
What Snowflake has said about the margin impact
In its Q2 fiscal 2027 results on September 2, 2026, Snowflake reported product revenue of $1.49 billion, up 37% year over year, and non-GAAP product gross margin of 74.7% for the quarter. Its outlook for full-year non-GAAP product gross margin is 74%.
On the earnings call (an auto-generated transcript, so wording may contain errors), the CFO tied that outlook to a higher mix of fast-growing AI workloads that carry a lower contribution margin today. The CEO said cost has become a real concern as models get more powerful, and described three responses:
- Routing. Many customer requests come in a mode called "auto," where Snowflake matches each task to a suitable model. The Cortex AI gateway routes tasks based on customer-defined policies and real-world performance data.
- Open models. Open-source models have different economics because Snowflake runs the inference itself, which the CEO said leaves room for future optimization.
- Falling list prices. The head of product said frontier model providers have been revising prices down on a regular basis, and that customers who locked large commitments to one model company have wished they had not.
That is the closest Snowflake comes to describing how it absorbs inference cost: it pairs each task with a cheaper model where it can, runs open models on its own capacity, and relies on vendor price cuts. The calls did not quantify the cost of Anthropic or OpenAI inference separately.
Cost controls customers can use
These are the controls Snowflake documents. None of them changes the per-token rate; they change how much you consume and who can consume it.
- Pick the model deliberately. The rate table is the biggest lever. Moving a classification job from claude-opus-4-6 to claude-haiku-4-5 changes the input rate from 3.00 to 0.60 credits per million tokens.
- Size jobs first. AI_COUNT_TOKENS incurs no token charges, so you can measure a prompt before running it over a table.
- Use prompt caching where it fits. Cache reads are billed at a reduced rate, per the pricing page and Table 6(b).
- Monitor usage in the account views. Query METERING_DAILY_HISTORY with SERVICE_TYPE set to AI_SERVICES for credits, CORTEX_FUNCTIONS_USAGE_HISTORY for per-function credits and tokens, and CORTEX_FUNCTIONS_QUERY_USAGE_HISTORY for per-query usage grouped by model. Snowflake notes that granular usage data is not available for REST API requests.
- Alert and limit per user. The account usage guide shows an hourly spend alert that emails administrators, a table of per-user monthly token budgets, and tasks that revoke and restore access. Enforcing it requires revoking SNOWFLAKE.CORTEX_USER from PUBLIC. These are example patterns you build, not switches.
- Cancel runaway queries. Cancelling stops further cost but does not refund credits already spent.
- Tag queries. Snowflake recommends QUERY_TAG session parameters so cost can be attributed by project or team.
- Budgets for agents. Resource budgets for Cortex Agents let you set a monthly limit in credits, attach notifications at percentage thresholds and block access at 100% by revoking a dedicated role. Enforcement can take up to eight hours.
What this means for buyers
- Budget in credits, then convert. Model your volume in millions of input and output tokens, multiply by the table rate, and then by $2.00 or $2.20 per credit. Routing choice changes the dollar price.
- Expect the rate card to move. The table is dated, models are added often, and some rows carry promotional pricing with stated step-ups. Re-check before renewal.
- Do not count on committed-spend discounts to cover AI. ACV-based AI Credit discounts apply automatically, but capacity discounts do not apply to AI Credits.
- Keep model neutrality. Snowflake's own product head says single-vendor commitments have drawn regret, and the platform lists both Claude and OpenAI rows. Design prompts so you can switch.
- Put guardrails in before scale. Hidden prompt tokens, per-record label counting and long outputs are how AI Functions bills surprise teams. Run usage queries from day one.
