What Is a Solutions Architect and How Does the Role Differ From a Sales Engineer in 2027?

Direct answer

A sales engineer is the technical seller on a deal: they run discovery, demos, proofs of concept and technical answers so the buyer is confident the product fits. A solutions architect designs how the product, or a cloud platform, fits into the customer's wider environment, and at many vendors that work continues after the sale. The core difference is the question each one answers. The sales engineer answers "will this work for us?" before the contract. The solutions architect answers "how should we build and run it?" and often stays with the account into migration and adoption.

In practice the titles overlap, and companies use them differently. AWS hires Solutions Architects as "a key member of the sales team" who also own the technical relationship; Salesforce uses Solution Engineer for its pre-sales technical role and lists solution architect as a separate, similar-sounding job; Microsoft puts its Cloud Solution Architect inside a Customer Experience & Success team that helps customers migrate and modernize. Always read the job description, not the title. Pay and certification figures below come from named sources; where no source publishes a number, this page says so.

The two roles in one view

These are the definitions used by the companies and agencies that publish them. They are not universal, because no standards body fixes the two titles.

Salesforce's own article names solution architect, consultant and engineer as similar-sounding roles that can be hard to tell apart, and does not define the architect role. If a vendor with both titles finds them confusing, expect your candidates and your own team to as well.

What each role does at AWS, Salesforce and Microsoft

These descriptions come from job postings and official role pages. Postings change and differ by team, so treat them as examples of how large vendors draw the line.

AWS Solutions Architect. In a New York posting (Job ID 10581442, posted October 16, 2026), AWS asks Solutions Architects to work with AWS Sales and other teams to craft scalable, flexible and resilient cloud architectures that address customer business problems and speed adoption of AWS services. Listed duties include:

AWS's careers page quotes an associate solutions architect describing four areas: coordinating with account teams on customer growth, meeting customers to understand challenges and give technical guidance, delivering workshops and demos, and learning about new AWS services.

Salesforce Solution Engineer. Salesforce's careers spotlight says solution engineers present product offerings and architecture to prospective and current customers, demonstrate solutions that address business requirements, and eliminate technical objections during the sales cycle. Its solution engineer article (June 21, 2023) adds that SEs build relationships with many external and internal stakeholders, including product managers and sales reps.

Microsoft Cloud Solution Architect. An archived Cloud and AI platforms infrastructure posting (no longer accepting applications, listed as posted 6+ months ago) sits in Microsoft's Customer Experience & Success team. Its duties include:

Read side by side, the Salesforce role is a sales-cycle role, the Microsoft role is about design and delivery guidance after a customer is on the platform, and the AWS role does both, tied to a revenue target. That spread is why the same title can mean different jobs.

Skills and certifications

The postings ask for different mixes of technical depth and sales skill.

Two vendor certifications are explicitly built around the architect job:

I found no equivalent official certification that defines the sales engineer role; the BLS page lists education and experience, not a credential.

Where each sits in the organization and how each is paid

At AWS the architect is described as a member of the sales team. At Microsoft the architect sits in a customer success organization. Sales engineers are usually paired with an account executive on a deal, and the BLS notes they often travel to meet with customers. Your own org chart will vary: some companies put pre-sales under sales, some under a separate solutions or technical organization.

Pay figures differ by who is measuring and what is included, so none of them can be compared as a clean gap between the two roles.

The BLS figure is a government wage median across employers. The Levels.fyi figures are self-submitted total compensation and skew toward large technology companies. I did not read a Glassdoor figure for either role, so none is quoted. Check current numbers on the linked pages before using them in an offer.

Career paths between the roles

No source I read publishes a standard promotion ladder between the two jobs, so this section stays with what the postings imply.

If you are hiring from one pool into the other, test for the missing half: selling skill for a pure architect, and design depth for a demo-focused engineer.

How a revenue leader should staff the two roles

I found no named source that publishes a recommended ratio of solutions architects or sales engineers to account executives, so no ratio is given here. The guidance below is judgment drawn from the job descriptions above, not a benchmark.

Questions people ask

What is a solutions architect?

AWS says a solutions architect is responsible for understanding a customer's business objectives and then builds technical solutions with AWS services to meet them. Microsoft's Azure certification describes the role as advising stakeholders and translating business requirements into designs.

What is a sales engineer?

The BLS says sales engineers sell business products or services, such as software or support, that require technical expertise.

What is the main difference between a solutions architect and a sales engineer?

A sales engineer proves the product fits during the sales cycle through discovery, demos and technical answers. A solutions architect designs the wider solution and, at many vendors, continues into migration and adoption. Titles overlap, so check the job description.

Which one earns more?

Levels.fyi shows a median of $218,000 for solution architects and $203,149 for sales engineers in the United States, both on pages updated 10/20/2026. The BLS median for sales engineers is $124,900 (May 2025). These measure different things, so they are not a like-for-like gap.

Is there a certification for solutions architects?

Yes. AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate and Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert are vendor certifications built around the role. No official credential for sales engineers was found.

Can a sales engineer become a solutions architect?

Postings suggest it is a credible route, since AWS prefers a track record in technology sales or consulting and Microsoft prefers customer-facing experience. No source reviewed publishes a formal promotion path.

How many solutions architects does a sales team need?

No named source reviewed publishes a recommended ratio, so none is given. Base the decision on how much design work your product needs before and after the sale.
